General SorenessThere might be general soreness or discomfort in the soft or hard tissue of the mouth. We recommend hot salt water rinses 3-4 times a day for the first week regardless of symptoms. These rinses condition the tissue: two teaspoons of salt in a glass of hot water from the tap. Aspirin or Advil is good for any tooth discomfort experienced during the first 2-3 days. If you have non-removable appliances you may apply a small piece of wax over any localized areas of soreness.
Orthodontic BracketsYour brackets are attached at full strength before you leave the office. You may eat immediately, according to the Eating Suggestions page of this site. You may brush your teeth without precautions.
Orthodontic Bands or Non-Removable Fixed AppliancesBanded cement reaches full strength within an hour. Therefore, you may eat as instructed immediately after the appointment if you choose. You may also brush normally without special instructions. You are advised not to drink dark colored sodas during treatment. These sodas (Pepsi, Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc.) tend to cause the cement to dissolve loosening the bands and subsequent decalcification of the tooth.
Removable AppliancesRemovable appliances may take a short time to become used to. We recommend removing your appliance while eating unless the doctor instructs you otherwise. Speech will improve rapidly with wear. Instructions for general soreness apply. Some people experience excessive salivation when their retainers are new. This is normal and will decrease after the first week.
